Her ‘boyfriend’, who knew about the situation, came to visit her two or three times a year. Then they split up. She went back to her province, married a Thai, and then headed back to the south to work in the parlour that had previously employed her. One beautiful day, her ‘Jules’ bumped into her again and joined her in Phuket. They have been back together ever since. Fairytale, fool’s game or livelihood?
Koy’s journey is representative of that of thousands of young Thai girls who play the game of ‘copinage’ – trying to become friends and wives of their clients to finally head to Europe, the golden destination. Sometimes, they emigrate to their western lover’s country of origin. A dream often accompanied by multiple experiences of disenchantment and separation.
The oldest job in the world gained a new lease of life in the sixties when the Thai government at the time, keen to ease the daily grind of the American ‘boys’ serving in Vietnam, set up zones of ‘Rest and Recreation’, mainly in Bangkok. Since then, tourists have taken over from the soldiers. Today, prostitution is officially illegal and since 2001 the ‘sex shows’ must take place exclusively in places designated for this purpose and close at 2am.
The battle of the sex workers for recognition of their status and for better working conditions is a long way from being won. But in this environment, hidden and yet so lucrative, where numerous westerners play the role of boss as well as client, it is an uphill struggle. A volunteer from the ‘Empower’ foundation, which works for the rights of ‘sex workers’ in Thailand to be respected, is witness to this: ‘I don’t care how society sees me; I do my job, that’s all. I’m not asking for the moon, I would just like to be treated decently at work, to have more than one day off per month, have access to social security …’

Police today announced the arrests of seven women in a prostitution sting in Hoover.
The undercover operation happened Tuesday, Oct. 6, at undisclosed locations throughout this city, said Hoover police spokesman Capt. Gregg Rector. One of the women was also in possession of crystal methamphetamine.
All seven were taken to the city jail. Rector said police will continue to try to identify any and all areas that are frequented by prostitutes. Hotels, he said, continue to be the preferred locations for prostitution, and police will continue to focus on those areas.
Those charged with prostitution are: Kiera Najeah Baker, 19, Birmingham; Erika Faye Chalmers, 21, Pinson; Shabreeka Tanae Dobbins, 26, Gadsden; Ashley Amber Rose Donahue, 28, Indianapolis; Taylor Dane Fisher, 27, Hoover; Geralyn Ann Gossett, 55, Atlanta; and Christina Pearl Speight, 34, Birmingham.
The bond on the prostitution charges was set at $1,000. Gossett was also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance. Her total bond was $6,000.
“Though some people mistakenly describe prostitution as a ‘victimless crime’, the law enforcement community knows all too well that simply is not the case. The community at large, families and the prostitutes themselves are all victims in the illegal sex trafficking business,” said Lt. Norman McDuffey. “The host of other crimes that are associated with prostitution include rapes, robberies, burglaries, thefts, assaults, homicides and lots of drug activity. Everyone that is involved with prostitution whether as a consumer or provider is subject to becoming a victim of other, more violent crimes as well.”
“Communities suffer from an increase in criminal activity of all kinds as a direct result when the illegal sex trade goes unchallenged by law enforcement. The prostitutes themselves are a victim of the lifestyle they have chosen or in some cases have been forced into,” McDuffey said. ” Drug addiction, exploitation and serious injury or even death are often the consequences of being involved with prostitution. The costs to our community and to everyone who is impacted by these crimes are too high to allow to continue unchecked.”

Still have a question? Ask your own!
They're both types of sex workers. A sex worker is simply a person who works in the sex industry, which includes much more than porn and prostitution. Other types of sex workers include webcam models, phone sex models, sex surrogates, and exotic and burlesque dancers. No one type of sex work is "worse" or less morally acceptable than the other. ALL sex workers are stigmatized and demonized to some degree, despite the fact that sex work has existed in various forms for the entirety of human civilization.
If an escort is a Doctor who goes to the hospital everyday and performs surgery on people, then a porn performer is Dr. Oz.
If an escort is a practicing psychologist, then a porn performer is Dr. Phil.
Both require knowledge about the topic at hand (sex, medicine, psychology), but the jobs require different personalities and specialized skill sets. Obviously one is more suited to direct, interpersonal work while the other is better suited to entertaining and appealing to a wide audience.
